How to Tell Your Boss You Have Too Much Work - The Muse
How to Tell Your Boss You Have Too Much Work - The MuseHow to Tell Your Boss You Have Too Much Work Dear Kyle,Can you explain how to tell your boss that you have an excessive workload (way mora than your colleagues at the same level) without sounding like youre just complaining or dont want to work hard?Signed,Overworked and Over It Hi Overworked and Over It,Talking to your manager about an excessive workload without sounding lazy or like a complainer is possible if you know how and when to issue your concern.Lets go over the basics first You want to be deliberate in your approach, notlage impulsive. For example, rather than stopping your boss as hes heading out the door to lament the number of hours youll be stuck at your desk finishing reports, youll want to schedule a meeting.Really, no matter how stressed youre feeling, its important to take a step back from your emotional state and properly plan for a conversation about having too much work. Its also important to keep the follow ing in mindDont Complain, Problem-SolveExpressing dissatisfaction with your situation without offering a way to fix the problem is complaining. But when you view the problem as a real and solvable issue, suddenly youre not just griping youre problem solving. Youre having a conversation with your boss wherein you identify a solution thatll ultimately improve the product of your work. Prepare to work with your boss by coming to the meeting with a few proposals. Consider these questions (and their answers) as you work to come up with those suggestionsIs the work simply too great for one partie to accomplish in a reasonable numbers of hours each week? Some additional support may save more time than it costs.Do you lack the appropriate resources to do the job? Consider researching and requesting a better system or additional support.Do you lack the training required to do the work efficiently? Think about requesting additional training, so that the work becomes less time-consuming.Be Spe cific, Not GeneralCharles Kettering, former CEO of General Motors, once said A problem well-stated is a problem half-solved. When you dont provide specific examples of the problem youre experiencing, you put the burden on your boss to be the problem-solver. Not all managers are skilled at navigating individual problems and identifying root causes, so avoid assuming yours will magically have all the answers. Speaking in general terms probably wont do you any favors.Instead of sayingI feel like Im being asked to do more than my co-workers and I dont think thats fair.Try this Ive been having some trouble keeping up with the amount of things on my plate right now, and was hoping we could talk about my role in item youd like to delegate and other item, since these things are taking up a significant amount of time.In the first example, youre basically asking your boss to process how you feel about your situation. Its borderline whiny. Dont depend on him to dig into the reason for your str uggle instead, offer specifics thatll help lead him to an easy understanding of whats really going on. Illustrating exactly whats keeping you busy encourages collaboration. Comparing yourself to co-workers when, chances are, you dont know the full story, is murky territory, and I dont recommend it. This is about whats going on with you and how you envision things improving.Focus on the Future, Not the PastHaving a reduced workload doesnt mean coasting. It means spending an appropriate amount of time on a reasonable amount of work. Its about working diligently, managing expectations, and not burning out. When you speak to your boss, explain your goals. Presumably you want to continue delivering quality work, and the way to do that is to literally have less work. Try this If we could take name of project or task off of my plate, Im confident that I could place more attention on name of top priority, ultimately exceeding my goals and working to advance the company in description of how you see your reduced workload aiding the organization or your team. Focusing on the outcome of your request indicates that you see the big picture, and there are few managers who wouldnt appreciate that. Hard-to-initiate conversations like this arent easy, but they do get easier. Learning to effectively communicate at work is an important part of your career. If you approach your manager with a well-articulated problem, a few potential resolutions, and a genuine desire to improve the final product, you wont sound like youre complaining or incompetent. Youll sound like you care about the work youre producing, and as an added bonus, youll hopefully set yourself on a path to a better work-life balance. Inspire People by Doing Your Job Well and Caring - The Muse
Inspire People by Doing Your Job Well and Caring - The MuseInspire People by Doing Your Job Well and Caring You get up every day and go to work because youre expected to show up. You try to do your job well because you want, at the very least, not to get fired, and at best to get ahead in your career. Ideally, you care about what youre doing and the people youre working with and treat them with kindness and respect. You get all kinds of reinforcements for good performance in your role- whetherbei its positive feedback from a manager, a raise, a promotion, or a new job offer. And you might notice some fleeting signs that youre motivating the people around you- maybe a thanks for your help here and a couldnt have done it without you there. But you never know how much you might inspire people in the long-run just by being great at your job and genuinely caring. Karin Brulliard recently wrote an essay for The Washington Post about how her mother accidentally found out decades later how m eaningful shed been as a teacher to a parteicular student shed taught in the 1960s. Mary Jacobson hadnt known that one of her seventh grade English students had gone on to become a spectacularly famous author. And she never realized how much early inspiration that student-turned-author, named Tamora Pierce (you mightve heard of her), attributed to Jacobson. Until the retired teacher heard an interview with Pierce on NPR that made her wonder if it might be that same little girl shed taught, all grown up. As Brulliard and her parents did some research online and at the library, they found out. It was right there in the biography on her website The next year, as I was still scribbling my own stories, my English teacher (bless you, Mrs. Jacobsen) introduced me to The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. I got hooked on fantasy, and then on science fiction, and both made their way into my stories. And in the dedication in Pierces 1998 novel Dajas Book, part of The Circle of Magic series To the teachers who shaped my life Rosemary Gomes, Mary Jacobsen, Margaret Emelson, and David Bradley, Jr. A great teacher is above all other treasures.Pierce may have been mistaken about the spelling of her old teachers name, but she was clear about the impact shed had on her life and career trajectory, later telling Brulliard that Jacobson also encouraged her to keep writing beyond school assignments and to save everything. Jacobson went above and beyond- and that it made a huge difference. Imagine how profound it would be for you to hear something like that about how your showing up, doing your job well, and just caring changed a persons life. What if you approached your interactions with your co-workers with that mindset every day? Take the time to help someone, go above and beyond whats in your job description, or mentor an employee who doesnt report to you. These probably wont be the first things to come up during your next performance review, but people will remember t he small and large acts of kindness you directed at them. So make it a habit as much as you can. You could end up in Jacobsons shoes a few years from now- finding out you changed someones life.

How to Start a Riding Stable
How to Start a Riding StableHow to Start a Riding StableWith over 9 million horses being used in the U.S. for sport or recreation each year, there is strong demand for training facilities where riders can receive proper instruction and board their horses. A riding stable geschftliches miteinander can be a fairly profitable venture if it is properly planned and managed. Hire Experienced Staff Individuals starting a riding stable should either have extensive experience training horses and riders themselves or hire riding instructors with this experience. Even if the facility owner does not have experience in all aspects of forming a riding stable, it is important that they find and hire appropriate personnel to assist with the venture (including an experienced barn manager and support staff). Obtain Facility Equipment The easiest way to start up a riding stable is to purchase or lease an existing facility, but some individuals choose to purchase a tract of land and build to su it. A riding stable must provide its clients with arenas where they can practice. The best (and most costly) arenas are the covered indoor sort, with lighting that allows riders to train at all hours. A more common and affordable vorkaufsrecht is the outdoor arena, which is not covered. A key element of either type of arena is that they use a safe, consistent footing that it routinely dragged to ensure it is kept level. Footings may range from sand or dirt based options to the most expensive synthetic creations. Additional features such as jump courses, round pens, and trails are often added. The facility must also have a barn with stalls, a feed room, a tack room, an office, fenced paddocks and fields, water troughs, proper storage areas for hay and bedding, and a full array of maintenance equipment. If the stable will provide horses for use in lessons, a reliable group of horses must be acquired, along with necessary equipment such as brushes, blankets, and riding tack. It can be a significant expense. Riding stables must comply with all local laws, including zoning regulations and business licensing requirements. They should also secure insurance and post the standard limitation of liability notices around the premises. Define Lesson Boarding Options Riding stables may offer lessons using facility owned horses or those owned by clients. Both group and private lessons are usually offered, in either hourly or half-hourly formats. The facility may also offer transportation for the horses to shows and other competitive events. Boarding options for client horses are usually also offered. Connect With Service Providers Every riding stable needs access to quality farrier services and veterinary care, so it is important to secure these relationships immediately. Suppliers of bedding, hay, and feed must also be identified. Ensure Competitive Pricing It is important, especially at the outset of your venture, that services are priced competitively for yo ur area. It will give new clients a financial motivation to try your services. Research your competition by calling around to other facilities or visiting their websites to learn what they charge for similar options. It might also be a good idea to offer incentives to get the business up and running, such as new client discounts or referral credits. Well known, established riding instructors will be able to command higher prices for lessons and clinics. They may also bring clients from their previous facility to yours, which is an added bonus. Advertise Be sure to advertise your riding stable at local equine facilities like feed stores, tack shops, and showgrounds. Local newspapers and equine magazines may also be good ways to reach your target audience. Advertising in horse show programs or publications from other major equine events can also be an excellent business decision. If your facilitys riders perform well in competitions, this might draw additional clients who are inte rested in trying your trainers methods to achieve similar success. Many riding stables create a website with photos, pricing options, and full details on their training program and competitive successes. The more information that can be placed online, the better. Over time, the best advertising will come by way of referrals from satisfied clients. One well-connected customer can provide many referrals to their friends and fellow riders. It is the kind of advertising that money cant buy.

Take Uber CEODara Khosrowshahis faux pas as a cautionary tale. Job interview question and answer What are your pet hates Job Interview Question And Answer What Are Your Pet Hates?Posted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Much like the dreaded Whats your biggest weakness?interview staple, your answer to this question can reveal a lot about you. Warning whatever you do, dont use this as an opportunity to whinge and moan about every little thing that irritates you. A long list of pet peeves will only make you seem negative, petty and hard to please. Instead, choose something that bothers you, and give a good reason as to why. Your employer wants to get a feel for what your hot buttons might be, and whether they could pose any potential problems in the workplace. Some examples of pet hates could be Inefficiency Tardiness Sloppiness Poor spelling and grammar Lack of communication Laziness geschftszimmer politics and gossip Inconsiderate or disrespectful behaviour Negativity Your response can be a good opportunity to tell the interviewer a little about y ourself by highlighting your values in the workplace, and giving them another reason to hire you. Its always best to name behaviours, rather than the people who enact them, and to keep things impersonal and objective. Whatever you do, dont come across as too extreme in your aversions. Any tendency towards extreme reactions or anger could ring alarm bells in the interviewer. Its also really important to consider your choice of words, your tone, the length of your answer and your body language when you answer this question. This is an example of a good answer I dont really care for negative attitudes in the workplace. Its not productive, as theres generally a solution to every problem. How to Deal with a Newly Promoted Boss - The MuseHow to Deal with a Newly Promoted Boss So, your new boss is, well, new- eitherbeibei at the company, at being a manager, or at both. While this can be exciting, it can also lead to frustrating challenges that youve never dealt with before. Yes, this persons (hopefully) qualified to do the job. But no, he or shes notlage going to be the perfect manager from day one. So, how can you handle this situation without letting that person affect your work or general well-being? There are a few strategies that Ive picked up after being in this position a few times- they not only made it easier, but also furthered my career. 1. Offer to HelpBeing a new manager can be a little overwhelming and a little lonely. So, take a look at what your new boss is struggling with and try to identify opportunities where you can step in and help.Maybe hes having trouble wrangling team updates from everyone, or way behind on a stack of crucial paperwork, or even j ust struggling with the companys internal technology. If you have the knowledge, offer a hand. And if you dont have that, but you do have the time, offer to do something you do know how to do. Sure, he can finish that spreadsheet this week, but offer to do it today so its one less thing for him to think about.Youll earn brownie points and have the potential to become his new right-hand person. 2. Take InitiativeIts likely that your boss is so busy with learning his or her new responsibilities that shes not focusing on new projects, or even peripheral ones, if they arent aligned with the departments core goals (no matter how promising they are, or how in-depth they were discussed with a previous manager). When one of my new supervisors started in her role, with a focus on the companys new products, I noticed that our blogging and social media efforts started to lag. Rather than sit around and watch our followers plateau, I set up a meeting with her, showed her what could be gained fro m keeping up our editorial and social platforms, offered to take it on, and set up a good time for me to fill her in on the progress. She said yes. That one conversation ended up opening many doors for me both within that company as well as with other potential employers. Plus, my boss greatly appreciated that she ended up looking good in the process, too, which wasnt a bad way to kick off a new relationship. 3. Play Along With Your Boss Micromanaging (at First)Its pretty common for people to micromanage their first couple of weeks (or months) on the job. While its easy to want to rebel upon the first bogus request your new boss makes (She wants to personally edit every client schmelzglas I send out), take a deep breath and remember this likely isnt permanent. Instead, its probably your managers way of getting a lay of the land and learning not only what you do, but how it plays into the teams larger effort. However, if this habit keeps going (or gets worse), you should definitely co nsider taking action. Dont feel like you can talk to your supervisor upfront about it quite yet? Try getting ahead of it. For example, do you know your manager is going to ask to see your client emails before you send them out? Send the drafts to him before he asks to prove that youre on top of your game.In most cases, managers (especially new ones) are looking for people they can count on to stay on top of their own work. The sooner you show this person that she has nothing to worry about with you, the sooner shell get off your back.4. Dont Shoot Down Every New Idea Your Boss HasJust because your manager is new doesnt mean that he doesnt have good ideas. In fact, he was (ideally) hired because he does. However, that doesnt mean hell walk in the door and immediately know which great ideas work for your company. So rather than refusing and just saying weve always done things this way, explain why. (Its a classic show, dont tell scenario.)One of my new bosses felt like our team was fr agmented and suggested starting an email chain to update one another with our daily progress. While her thinking made sense, our team knew this would quickly get annoying. But rather than Reply All to her with a no, I told her one-on-one that I loved her idea (we were too fragmented) and I wanted to offer up a suggestion What if we did this over Slack instead? I explained it was actually better than email because Slack was much more efficient (not to mention, all of our inboxes wouldnt be clogged with unrelated messages). Rather than turning down her idea, I helped her to make it a stronger one. Having a new person in charge doesnt have to be a drag- it can actually be an important and exciting career opportunity if you let itPhoto of computer help courtesy of Shutterstock.
Science says that sleeping on it actually works
Science says that 'sleeping on it' actually works Science says that 'sleeping on it' actually works When you are working through a tricky problem in your head, you may want to sleep on it. New research published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that a daytime snooze can help us wake up with new insights on how to tackle a challenge. How sleeping on it helps us think betterTo test the brain-boosting power of a nap, researchers from the University of Bristol recruited 16 healthy participants to complete a word-response task that had implicit clues on how to answer and a control task. They then either had to either stay awake or had the opportunity to take a 90-minute nap before doing the tasks again. The short snooze helped. You may not look like you are doing much during a nap, but underneath your resting eyes, your mind is rapidly facilitating the processing of unconscious information. Researchers found that this short nap was enough to help participantsâ score higher on the task with hidden clues.âEven a short bout of sleep may be sufficient for nuanced implicit cue p rocessing and improved accuracy of response,â the study concluded.Daytime naps can not only help you process unconscious information, but they can also improve memory. A one-hour nap after lunch improved 3,000 peopleâs ability to recall tasks better. Nap haters say that a nap is an easy way for us to put off our problems. But if you need a new way of thinking, rest your weary eyes and sleep on the problem. You may wake up with a new answer you never would have dreamed up before.

15+ Job Interview Tips from People Who Have Gotten Hired -
15+ Job Interview Tips from People Who Have Gotten Hired - 15+ Job Interview Tips from People Who Have Gotten Hired - Between getting selected for an interview and being hired, applicants have less than a 1% chance of landing any one position. This places a lot of pressure on interviewee to articulate their suitability in a convincible way. That can make interviews seem like a high pressure make or break moment. However, the majority of the convincing begins long before you enter an interview.Recruiters have specific criteria they hope you fulfil; from your resume all the way to the job offer. The best thing you can do is understand what your recruiters are looking for and how you can satisfy those needs. Below, weâve compiled 19 interview tips that will give you the best chance at being in that 1% of people who get hired. 1. Think about why you want this job The recruiter is looking to identify your intentions and determine what impact theyâll have on their bottom line. Remember, the business is there to succeed, not just survive. If your reason for wanting a job is simply to make ends-meet, yo u should consider packaging this in another way. Perhaps youâve been interested in a particular industry for a while and want more hands-on experience or youâd like to help an organisation you know do better in a certain area. Your reasoning for wanting this position should link in with the business succeeding in one area or another. Some examples are: âI want to explore [area of business] further to round out my experience after doing [previous experience] for [length-of-time] âI noticed youâre going into [new venture of business] and I believe in that project. I want to use [your relevant skills] to help accomplish [business goals].â[Company name] is known for [good quality of business]. This interests me because it was lacking in my previous job. I think the [good quality of business] will keep me motivated and help me succeed in accomplishing [business goals] here. 2. Understanding the whyOne thing that we often neglect is understanding why recruiters ask the questio ns they do. Your job is to entice the recruiter by giving them what theyâre looking for in the job. Understanding the reasoning behind their questions is key to this. There are many ways you can try understand the âwhyâ behind a question. Simply looking at sample interview questions and thinking about what exactly thatâs asking you is a great start. The job description can also give you great insight. The question youâre being asked is probably related to something youâll be involved in in your role finding common questions and referencing them against your job description will show you that connection.âWhat are your greatest weaknesses?â; a question we often get asked when applying for a job. Without thinking of the reasoning behind this question, you might just answer with âI always leave the fridge door openâ or âI donât know how to change a car tyreâ. When you understand that the recruiter is seeing if youâre self-aware of qualities that might hinder y our ability to perform, you can answer the question effectively.4. Know your weaknesses Career advisor Ben points out it is important for you to be knowledgeable of your weaknesses. Itâs a disadvantage to take someone on that is ignorant to their own areas-of-improvement. A good way of approaching this type of question in an interview is to speak on a previous experience that you struggled with. âWell, in the past I had difficulty withâ¦â and mention that you are looking to improve on this issue in the current position through X, Y and Z. This answers the recruiters question without making it seem theyâre inheriting a liability. Make sure the weakness youâre highlighting is not an essential skill for the position youâre hoping to secure. If it is, this might be a red flag for the recruiter. 5. Know your resume wellOne of the greatest resources recruiters will have on your life will be your resume. Leaving prepared questions aside, anything the recruiter asks you will be taking inspiration from your resume. You need to know the things that are on your resume quite well for this reason. Thereâs no greater red flag than when the recruiter asks you about your 30% user growth for a previous employer only to be met with a blank face. If itâs on your resume, be prepared to talk about it and provide more information than what is on the page.6. Any questions? At the end of the interview, it is common to be asked if you have any further questions. Itâs important that you have something prepared as not following up can give the impression you know little of the position or are concerned with other vacancies (and thus have done little preparation for this interview).Common questions include those that directly address the organisation, for example:âCould you tell me more about diversity policies currently in place?ââWhat have previous people in the position struggled most with?â, âWhat are common misconceptions about this role?â,How do you se e this role fitting into the businessâ mission?â.While these show youâre in-tune with the business and take a genuine interest in its management, there is room for improvement. The best questions to ask at the end of your interview are those that open a dialogue and create a fluid conversation. An example of this sort of question is: Is there anything in my application that bothers you? This sort of question shows your desire to improve and demonstrates your ability to take critique. It also gives insight into secondary concerns of the recruiter and gives you an area to work on you may have not been aware of. Even if you dont get this job, youll have this information for the next interview. Its win-win.7. Donât lie Lying can only get you so far in an interview: it is very rare to be the right decision. As Ben brought to our attention, recruiters who notice intervieweeâs lying will âend an interview earlyâ and automatically take them out of consideration. Answer hones tly and stick to your true experiences thatâs what the recruiter is interested in.8. Understand the USP of the position Working in customer support, Sia says he always researches âthe USP of [his] positionâ. This is the unique-selling-point of your job. Essentially, this asks what does your role add to the business. What impact does it make for the firm and how does it differ to all other roles that are employed on the team? Understanding the USP of a position will help you comprehend exactly why the vacancy exists and how you can apply yourself. To get a grasp of the USP of your position you can: Look into the businessâ social media to see their latest projectsAnalyze the job description to see essential skills not shared among people in the companyIdentify the seniority of your position (if youâre a the Head of a department, your USP is your expertise) If you canât figure out the USP of your position, this is a great question to ask during the interview as mention in #5.9. What do people not like about the business? One of the greatest things you can do to prepare for an interview is to ask people in the organisation what they donât enjoy about the firm. This can give you a better understanding of issues within and where you can help improve. It can also give you more information on the work culture and help you negotiate whether or not youâre willing to take a job offer should the interview go well. You can get in contact with people through LinkedIn or Facebook Groups to do this. 10. Allow yourself to say no Much like knowing your weaknesses, do not fear saying no in an interview. As pointed out to us by data scientist Pavel, âYouâre afraid to say no you [donât have experience with something], but thatâs totally fine to say. I think I had a perception that saying no is a very bad thing when at an interviewâ.This ties into not lying in an interview, too. You donât need to pretend to have experience with a certain technology or sy stem in an interview if you havenât. What is important is that you highlight your ability to pick up new concepts quickly and demonstrate a willingness to learn. 11. Research where the company is headed Gal (who works in business development) gave us a great insight into his interview preparation. Researching the goals of the business for the next 6-18 months will allow you to spot opportunities to shine. If you notice that they have a product launch upcoming next year, you might have skills that can aid that. The recruiter will be concerned with the difference you can make now to the firm. However, theyâll be impressed seeing the differences you can make now and in the future. To see where the business is headed in the next 6-18 months you can: Check news stories about the firm Interview people that work in the business currently on their projectsReview the companyâs LinkedIn page 11. Research field trendsWhatever position youâre going for, it will be situated in a certain s ector. This can be Tech, Marketing, Finance, Health, and many others. Understanding the trends within your field will give you a great platform to speak on directions the company can take in the future. This also links to having a follow-up question for your recruiter. If you spot a trend in the field, you can ask what the companyâs plans are to address this. You can learn more about trends in your field by: Searching [Field] Trends [Year]Checking the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (or another countryâs equivalent)Researching the projects of competitorsFollowing industry-specific media (Business Insider, The Financial Times and so on) 12. Donât jump to say everything As interviewees, we think recruiters will want to hear everything we have done and all the reasons we are great. But, this isnât always the case. As a former CEO, Pavel notes that âwhen you interview people you donât want to know all the great things they did in their life, you just want to know if they meet the requirements or not.âYou might be anxious to get all of your great points across but the key details you need to convey are those related to the position youâre applying for. 13. Mock interviews Contacting friends to run-through mock interviews with you will allow you to calm your anxieties and frame your answers. Prepare some common interview questions and have someone that you know ask you them. This way, you get to hear yourself speak aloud and will build confidence in your response. To find interview questions to use for these, you can check Glassdoor. Mock interviews can be enhanced by having a recruiter or a friend that works at the company conduct them for you. 14. Prepare a checklist Not all interviews are to get hired at a new company some are for promotions and moving to a new internal role. Often, these types of interviews will require an in-depth knowledge of the company and a plan-of-action for what you will do if youâre granted this promoti on.You can get lost in your thoughts and become flustered if youâre worrying about missing something important or forgetting a statistic. Preparing a one-page document that you can use to go over your thought processes is a great way to overcome this. 15. Training sessions Many people struggle with interview skills. For this reason, thereâs an abundance of interview skill trainings found all over the world. Training sessions are great for meeting other people that are looking to develop the same expertise as you especially if you donât have a close network of friends to sit and run through mock interviews with you.16. Video content If youâre bored with static information, researching interview questions, and donât have the means to go out and meet others to prepare for an interview, online video content is the best option for you. There are hundreds of videos on Youtube of real people that provide interview advice and preparation.Deniz Sasal provides a comprehensive guide to answering interview questions with an analysis of why those questions are being asked.17. Give experiential responses The recruiter has already had a chance to look over your resume and cover letter. They know what your duties were in other organisations simply regurgitating these statements to them will lead to disinterest. Your responses should be framed experientially, meaning that you should tell stories. Rather than stating you were involved in a product launch, talk about what that process was like. Much like how you should quantify achievements on your resume, your responses should have a narrative to them.18. Choose your highlights Before going into an interview, think on the highlights of your career that are most applicable to what youâre going for. Gal considers this to be his most important step. â I rehearse with myself talking about each highlightâ. This structures the way you speak about your most relevant experience and will allow you to be articulate in y our previous accomplishments. 19. Prepare yourself There are many things you can do to prepare for an interview. One thing we can forget is to prepare ourselves, not our materials and not our responses. Meditation is a great way to center oneself before entering an interview. Most importantly, remember to eat, drink and sleep beforehand. Without taking care of yourself you canât expect to perform to the best of your ability.Job interview preparation All of these tips come down to a single truth: thereâs no silver bullet for a job interview. You need to think critically about how to best apply these tips to your specific situation and then put in the effort to really prepare. Remember that the right job can change your life, so itâs worth working hard to get it. This is the surprising generation that is most prepared for retirement
This is the surprising generation that is most prepared for retirement This is the surprising generation that is most prepared for retirement Despite the stigma that proceeds them, Millennials are actually more prudent when it comes to retirement than both Generation X and Baby Boomers-at least according to a yearly report conducted by the TransAmerica Center for Retirement Studies. The data was pulled from 2, 156 millennial full time/part time workers, 1,476 Generation X full time/ part time workers, 1,477 full time/part time workers from The Baby Boomer generation and 59 workers born before 1946.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Thereâs always a bit of ambiguity when it comes to defining generations, but the study defines each as follows:Millennials: 1979 to2000Generation X: 1965 to 1978Baby Boomer: 1946 to 1964Do Americans do enough planning for retirement? Seventy-two percent of all workers examined in the TransAmerica Center for Retirement Studies report are eagerly awaiting retirement.Baby Boomers are the most enthused (81%) which makes sense considering theyâre the generation closes to being eligible for it, even if out of all three generations, Millennials are the most optimistic about their mortality, with 17% expecting expecting to live passed 100 years old.According to the study, millennials actually start saving for retirement around the age of 24, which is six years earlier than Generation Xers and more than ten years earlier than Baby Boomers (the ages of which were cited at 30 and 35 respectively). The study reports, âGiven their relatively young age, Millennials are surprisingly engaged in the topic of retirement. One in five Millennials (21 percent) frequently discuss savings, investing, and planning for retirement with family and friends, which is significantly higher than for the older generations.â Although Millennials are practicing a welcomed degree of preemptive caution, every generation falls short of the number the majority of finical advisors recommend saving for retirement. Many experts believe workers should set aside at least 10% to !5% of their income to ensure a relatively comfortable post work tenure. As it stands the majority of Millennials roughly save a collective $23,00 a year for retirement, Generation Xers put away about $66,000, and Baby Boomers save around $152,000 in total.More shockingly Millennials contribute more to their 401k than Generation X. On average , Millennials put about 10% of their income (this is about the same for Baby Boomers), while most workers from Generation X contribute about 8% of their income. On this the authors speculate the following, âfor better or worse, some {Generation X} have taken loans and early withdrawals. Their retirement confidence is lacking and many are behind on their savings.âGeneral projections Despite all of the data indexed above, more than half of workers utilized in the recent study plan to work after they reach retirement age.Forty-one percent plan to work part-time and 14% plan to continue working full time. Millennials and Generation X make up this statistic the most (17% and 14% respectively). For the most part, the participants occasioned merely wanting more income as a reason they will continue to work after retirement age but 72% cited health aging reasons. Forty-seven percent of that number saying, working will enable them to remain active more consistently in old age. Balancing Act Ethical Interviewing That Works
Balancing Act Ethical Interviewing That Works Balancing Act Ethical Interviewing That Works Alright, folks, itâs time to get honest. In todayâs age of social media that shares every meal, vacation and purchase, combined with tabloid news that âspills the beansâ on the intimate details of every quasi-celebrity or public figure, itâs pretty easy to think that nothing is off limits when it comes to the personal lives of those we interact with. From oversharing ourselves to prying into the lives of our co-workers through nosey, probing questions, weâve become gluttons for information, and for filing that info away for future use. In the real world, this merely makes you that crappy friend that nobody wants to share with. In the realm of hiring, however, this can create serious ethical dilemmas that may get you into hot water legally and could have a negative impact on your companyâs reputation. In order to help avoid the pitfalls that may be caused by these types of practices, itâs important for employers to promote and ethical culture in their interview process. Well, youâre probably thinking, that sounds all well and good, but how exactly do I go about implementing such a change? Glad you asked! Keep reading as we delve into suggestions for establishing an ethical interviewing system that works. Begin At The Beginning As with any new or revised system, ensuring an ethical interview process starts at the beginning. Effective and ethical hiring techniques not only keep your company out of the legal hot water, but they also contribute to your company culture and reputation both with clients and when it comes to making your next hires. This often begins with a transparent interview process that is clearly communicated to potential recruits. Consider listing the application and interview process in your job posting or on the career page of your corporate website. Not only will this clue candidates in on the potential process theyâll be facing, but it also will set the right tone for anyone looking to gain insight into your brand and corporate culture. Be sure to include an abbreviated version of your statement, along with your commitment to ethical, fair and diverse hiring practices in all of your job listings to add confidence to those looking to apply with your company. Using a non-discrimination statement on job descriptions not only signals that youâre compliant with local laws, but it also serves as an extra layer of comfort to any minority or protected classes that may not have prior experience with your company. A standard statement looks something like: Our company is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Our employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, pregnancy, national origin, citizenship, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, veteran status, military status, or any other characteristic or status protected by federal, state or local law. Be sure that your managers, hiring managers, HR coordinators, and others meeting with interviewees are well versed in both your company and legal standards for ethical interviewing. Once youâve added a candidate to your roster, consider taking a survey of the hiring process that includes their views on whether you measured up to your claims. Not only will it set the right tone with new hires, but it will also serve as a valuable way to keep your managers accountable during the hiring process. Create A Culture Of Knowledge On the topic of ongoing training, its important that you not wait until a position is in need of filling before giving feedback and guidance on ethical interviewing. Incorporate this type of training into annual compliance or feedback programs. Different options for education may include: A quick-tips guide regarding illegal questions, potentially offensive questions, and effective interviewing techniques always available on your company intranet A yearly newsletter on interviewing doâs and donâts If you have an internal employee referral program, the document communicating the terms is a great place to stress what should and should not be said to potential recruits As part of manager promotion training, add in an interview segment in their initial packet or transition program If you have a mentorship or career development program, interviewing should be added as a vital element for career growth skills Deliver Training Weâve mentioned training several times as a key method for establishing an ethical interviewing environment. Not all training is created equal, however, and itâs critical that your communication to those involved in the hiring process meet your individual program needs. Consider staging mock interviews with or without scripts. Live and interactive Q Aâs are often great ways to kick off discussions on best practices and to help participants identify what could have been done better. Video presentations are also excellent and employers should strive to use company participants to help make the scenarios as real world as possible. Be sure to address some tough but common areas that come up in interviews and supply plenty of guidance on how to keep things on the up and up when they arise. Review What Works Last but not least, every employer should be sure to tailor its ethical hiring process to what fits the needs of the individual industry, company, and position. There are, however, some universal principles that can be applied across most hiring programs: Be timely and organized when setting an interview schedule with a candidate Ensure that interviewers are prepped for effective and ethical interviewing behavior and questions Proactively provide timelines next steps to candidates regarding the interview process Follow the above basic approaches to ensure that your company develops a strong foundation as a great employer and a great place to interview. Recruiters and hiring managers can also set their interviewers up for success by providing guidance in the way of common or suggested questions or topics. Often when an unethical question is raised itâs inadvertent and due to a lack of preparation or knowledge rather than the desire to delve into an illegal subject. If you have a behavior question approach to interviewing, be sure to have the interviewer prep and preview these with HR, recruiting or senior management in advance. Work with interviewers to encourage them to have a list of questions to ask potential candidates. This step will be especially important for those on your team that have little to no prior recruiting experience. Caution interviewers about casual conversations. Icebreaker type of small talk is one of the most common areas where an interview can go out of bounds. Need a bit of guidance on topics to avoid? As a refresher, see the following areas that cover protected categories for any candidate and should never be included in an interview: age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, marital status, family status, religion, disability. The Bottom Line Remember that the interview process has a direct impact on your recruiting brand and, therefore, your ability to generate a positive impression in attracting top talent in the future. Advertising that youâre an ethical employer is one thing, but word of mouth is often more powerful as a direct insight into whether your companyâs words are put into action. Dedicate time to training for the interview process and reap the rewards of knowing that your ethical message will be firmly communicated across all levels and company interactions.

Someones always watching
Someone's always watching Someone's always watching Giblin and several other former employees at the paper started their own newspaper-like website (the Arizona Guardian) that focuses on the state's political and governmental scenes. He was down and out, but is now online and in headlines. In the best of all possible worlds which this isn't, given the financial and organizational shambles that is news publishing the award would lead to some interesting job offers. It still could, but any potential deals would certainly arrive on a more relaxed timetable that usual. So for anyone out there, continue to do your best work, even if you know your corporate ship may be sinking. Even if you get laid off, your contributions to the company will live on and you never know who's watching. Contrary to the printed warning on a stock prospectus, for your next potential employer, your past performance often serves as a guarantee of future results. Management Matters Most in Employee Motivation
Management Matters Most in Employee Motivation Management Matters Most in Employee Motivation Motivation is the most powerful emotion that employees bring to work. The management role in stimulating motivation through shared vision and communication is the fundamental skill that great managers bring to the workplace. Employees in management roles can learn to inspire motivation. According to Jon Gordon, author of Soup: A Recipe to Nourish Your Team and Culture, âEmployees are in a funk. They are fearful, overworked, distrustful, and have less enthusiasm and passion than ever. And, many leaders are continually frustrated by their teams performance and low employee morale and engagement. The answer, says Gordon, doesnt involve fancy technology, a new piece of equipment, or extensive RD. In fact, the answer lies in a basic human emotion: motivation. Leaders who motivate do. Now, more than ever, a leaders job is to motivate and rally his or her team through challenging times. You cant outsource motivation. It is the leaders and managers who must motivate. Most business leaders want to take the emotion out of business, he says, but that is a huge mistake. When fear and negativity are the primary emotions people in your organization are feeling, you have to counter that with an even more powerful emotion, like faith, belief, and optimism. And your success in that depends on your ability to motivate. Motivation Through Management Jon Gordon participated in an interview to flesh out important ideas about management and motivation and the roles of culture, communication, vision, emotion, and relationships in inspiring motivation. Susan Heathfield: All of the readers have an opinion and a picture in their minds when they hear words such as employee motivation and employee engagement. Define what you mean when you refer to employee motivation and employee engagement so that we are all starting together with a shared picture. Jon Gordon: Employee motivation is based on the culture management creates and what the leader or manager says and does to help employees perform at their highest level. The goal is to motivate employees with the right environment and management practices that bring out the best in employees so they can give their best to the organization and customers. Employee engagement is how committed, excited, energized and passionate you are about the work you are doing and the organization you are working for. Heathfield: What is the managementâs responsibility in creating this environment for employees? Gordon: I believe it is one of the most important things that a manager must do. They must create the right environment and culture that fuels people and their performance. Culture drives behavior, behavior drives habits, and habits create the future. As the leaders at Apple Computer say, âCulture beats strategy all day longâ. Heathfield: How about the employee? Should employees sit back and wait for their management to motivate them? What is their shared responsibility? Gordon: Every employee contributes to the culture of their organization. Therefore, employees share the responsibility of motivation. In fact, you canât motivate someone unless they want to be motivated. The employeeâs responsibility is to come to work every day and work with maximum effort and energy to contribute to the vision and goals of the organization. They need to motivate themselves. And managers must also create an environment that motivates them. Heathfield: As the number of unemployed workers has reached an all-time high, employees are wary about job searching and changing employment. Many believe that they are better off where they areâ"with a jobâ"than walking among the ranks of the unemployed. The site readersâ favorite recent article, however, was 5 More Reasons to Quit Your Job, so, under the circumstances, there must be a pent-up interest in moving on from current employers. Knowing this, how would you advise managers to create an environment in which employees want to stay and are motivated to work hard, contribute, and continue to develop their talents and skills with their current employer? Gordon: It makes a lot of sense. People arenât quitting because they want security, not because leaders and managers are building winning teams. The solution is to create what I call a culture of greatnessâ"a culture in which you focus on creating a culture that values, cares for, and develops their employees. The key is to create engaged relationships with your employees. I write a lot about this in my book Soup. Focus on investing in people: training them, mentoring them, appreciating them, recognizing them, encouraging them, coaching them and caring about them. Very simple objectives, but too many organizations and managers donât do them. Heathfield: What are the key areas of employee motivation and engagement that a manager can tap into, recognize, and reinforce so that employees are clear about what is most wanted from them? Gordon: The key is to share the vision of the organization and then talk to each employee and have each employee understand how they contribute to this vision. The vision canât exist on a piece of paper. It must come to life in the hearts and the minds of the people who work in your organization. I believe that every organization must have a vision and purpose and each employee must know, understand, and demonstrate how they contribute to this vision and purpose. Even more powerful is when each employee taps into their own personal vision and purpose to contribute to the vision and purpose of the organization. Heathfield: What would you recommend for management eager to create a work environment in which employees choose to be motivated, excited, and contributing? Gordon: Expect the best from the employees. You can settle for nothing less than excellence. But you also help each person achieve excellence. You help each employee be their best. You create the culture that is motivating, exciting and flexible and then you give employees room to grow in this culture. Donât micromanage. Trust them. Develop relationships with them. Give them opportunities to share ideas, and contribute and they will. Also, give them room to make mistakes. Nothing drains an organizationâs energy more than fear of failure. Heathfield: How can managers support each other in creating a motivational work environment for employees? Gordon: By sharing best practices. By doing a book study together. By discussing their success and also failures so they can learn and grow together. The key is to be humble and hungry. Learning and growing and improving with a hunger and desire to get better. Heathfield: What are the specific actions that management can take on a daily basis to create a motivating environment for employees? Gordon: The actions management can take are so simple and full of common sense and yet they are uncommonly practiced⦠The actions include smile more at employees. Listen to them, their ideas and solutions. Earn trust by saying what you will do and doing what you say. Appreciate them with a sincere âthank youâ. Companies spend billions on recognition programs and what people really want is âthank youâ. Coach them so they know that you care about them. Invest in them so they know that you are concerned about their growth and future. And, do the little things to show them you care: An encouraging word, a listening ear. If you donât treat them like a number, they wonât treat you or your customers like a number. Heathfield: What actions on managementâs part will alienate employees and make them resentful, unhappy, and negative? Gordon: The worst? Yelling at them. Berating them. Making them work hard but not sharing appreciation or recognition. Negative comments. Most of all, making them feel like they or their work doesnât matter. Managements Role in Motivation Arguably, managements ability to create an environment in which employees choose motivation is the key management role for the success of your organization. Other roles, such as managing change, hiring talented employees, and setting measurable goals, are enhanced by managements ability to inspire motivation and contribution from employees. Motivation matters, to management, to employees, and to your organization.

Medical Standards for Military - Upper Extremities
Medical Standards for Military - Upper Extremities Medical Standards for Military - Upper Extremities The military requires applicants to be a picture of health upon entry into the armed services. The first layer of screening comes in the recruiters office when the recruits fills out the medical disclosure form. Here the applicant states fills out the Pre-Screen Questionnaire (DoD Medical Forms 2807-1, 2807-2). Once through that hurdle, the medical officers at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) clinic will conduct the clincal evaluation on the DoD Form 2808. The Upper Body Issues Preventing Acceptance into the Service From shoulder to fingers, hyper-flexible joints, frozen joints, missing fingers, limbs, any paralysis are some of the more common reasons candidates for the military get disqualified at MEPS or the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) for both enlisted recruits and officer candidates respectively. The military has strict standards of both mental and physical skills that vary in specifics depending upon the job or military occupational specialty being sought by recruits. There are some minimal standards that must be met and many of these are not waiverable. Some can be waived but each waiver for any disqualifying condition requires command level authorization and are decided upon on a case by case basis. A recruit will be rejected for entry into the military (officer or enlisted) unless a waiver is approved if the applicant has a history of: Limitation Of Motion (Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist) Shoulder Joint Normal range of motion of the shoulder must be able to elevate in front of the body to 90 degrees. The process of abduction where the arm can be lifted to the side of the body to 90 degrees is required. Elbow Joint Bending the elbow by flexing the biceps muscles to a range of motion of at least 100 degrees is required. (Flexing the arm at the elbow) Extension of the elbow by flexing the triceps muscles to a range of motion of at least 15 degrees is required. (straightening the arm) Wrist A total range of motion of at least 60 degrees (extension plus flexion) or radial and ulnar deviation combined arc 30 degrees. Hand Pronation to a minimum standard of 45 degrees means having a range of motion that allows you to rotate your hand so your palm is facing toward the ground when your forearm is parallel to the floor. Supination to a minimum standard of 45 degrees means having a range of motion that allows you to rotate your hand so your palm is facing toward the sky when your forearm is parallel to the floor. Fingers and Thumb Not being able to clench your fist, pick on a pin, grab an object or touch the tips of your fingers with your thumb is disqualifying. You must be able to at least touch three fingers to your thumb to be eligible for military service. Hand and Fingers Absence of any finger, piece of finger, or thumb is disqualifying without a waiver. Any absence of the hand or any part of the hand is disqualifying. Any extra finger is also disqualifying. Any scars or deformities whether congenital or accidents that prevent formal function of the hand and would interfere with military duties are disqualifying. Any nerve damage that causes paralysis, weakness, numbness, or the hands, fingers, and arms is disqualifying. For instance, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital syndromes, lesion of ulnar and radio nerves that cause muscle atrophy, weakness, numbness, or paralysis is disqualifying.Any disease, injury (bone or soft tissue), or birth defect that causes weakness or disqualifying symptoms that prevents the ability to perform military duty that includes but it not limited to chronic joint pain, arm, hand, and fingers. See also section on Miscellaneous Conditions of the Extremities. In conclusion, the section of the body from shoulder to fingers are highly mobile and subject to intense scrutiny during processing into the military. Muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and joints for this region of the body are easily injured and often require surgery to repair. If the retained hardware from surgery impairs any function, it is disqualifying. However, if corrected through surgical means, retained hardware such as plates, pins, rods, wires, or screws used to repair the injury and there is no pain, ligaments and bones are stable, and it is not subject to easy trauma, the metal is allowed with waiver approval.

How Instagram Can Help You With Your Job Hunt
How Instagram Can Help You With Your Job Hunt How Instagram Can Help You With Your Job Hunt Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are great for keeping in touch with your family and friends, and are also important tools for professional networking. But Instagram has now become a site of choice for companies to interact visually with their customers, and may be the latest and greatest way to help you in your job search. Here are 5 ways to use Instagram in your job search: Brand Yourself. A picture is worth a thousand words. In this sense, Instagram can be used as a personal branding machine. If youre interested in becoming a chef for a specific company, for example, post pictures to your account that show the best dishes you can make, or photos of you commanding a kitchen crew, then hashtag to get your name out there. Show that you are immersed in the food industry and that you love what you do. Donât be afraid to hashtag the name of your target company, so your photos will show up on their company page. This is perfect for branding, and not only will it connect you with other industry folk, but it can snag the attention of the company youre after, if your photos catch their eye. Become a Follower. If you have a company in mind that youd like to work for, or if you have 20 of them, make sure to follow what they are doing and connect to the other industry experts they are following. Find out company values and other organizations they may be connected to, whether they be work related, non-profit affiliations, etc. In this way, you can tweak your Instagram account to showcase your interest in all the things your desired company is interested in. You can also follow specific people or departments within a company. The benefit here is that you can see people/ companies who they have personally tagged, and then network with these people. If you want to know who is at the top of the hiring chain or who the most influential members of a company are, check out their website. You can also use this info to find and follow them on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, creating a networking windfall. Use Hashtags. One of the most effective ways to get a company to notice your Instagram account is to use hashtags. Use industry keywords as hashtags to describe pictures youâve posted; i.e. if you attended an important culinary conference or workshop, you could upload a photo of the event with #chef and #(nameofconference), or the hashtag the conference is already using. This makes your photo searchable and easier to find by those who attended the event and other industry insiders- which could lead to a lot of connections. Hashtags also boost your photos placement in general search results. You never know who might wind up looking at your picture! Tag to Self-Promote. You can also tag a specific company to get their direct attention. This act is more about blunt self-promotion, so make sure what youre posting is not only relevant, but that it conveys what you want to portray about yourself. Do some company research and use applicable terms when you tag a company in a post. Lets say youre interested in working for a restaurant that specializes in Kobe beef. Instagram a picture of yourself praising their dish, preferably dining on it in their establishment, then tag a photo of your version of the dish. This will likely spark intrigue from the company- just as long as it looks good and its done in a respectful and non-competitive way. Tip: Donât hashtag every single picture that you post, or youâll dilute the worth of your hashtags and you will start annoying people (this is the last thing you want to do). Only tag the very best of your best work. Connect. Once youâre following your desired company or companies, and have hashtagged accordingly, its time to connect, if you havent already done so. A great way to start is to comment on their own Instagram photos to spark a conversation. Ask a question, as this is a great way to get in touch with current employees or management. Or better yet, answer a question in response to posted consumer inquiries. This can garner acknowledgement from the company that you have the inside scoop and know what youre talking about. (Just make sure you do know what youre talking about if you try to answer a question. Not providing the right info can invariably tank your employment chances.) Social media is quickly becoming one of the fastest ways to find a remote job. Make the most of your Instagram account, and use this visual network to show employers who you are and what you can offer them. Landing your dream job may literally be a snapshot away. Readers, do you use your Instagram account to job hunt? Let us know how in the comments section below!
